Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has revolutionized the field of surgery over the last 20 years. Laparoscopic surgery is one commonly known type of MIS, but MIS has expanded beyond laparoscopy. MIS procedures are widely accepted as the standard of care in many surgical specialties for specific procedures. It is done through small incisions that require little stitching to close, which often makes MIS preferable to traditional surgery for both doctors and patients.
At Northwestern Memorial, surgeons often use minimally invasive approaches for some types of spine surgery and to treat scoliosis. Additionally, thoracic surgeons within the Center for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery have extensive experience utilizing robotic and minimally invasive
techniques for the treatment of benign (non-cancerous) and malignant
(cancerous) conditions of the lungs, esophagus, pleura, and
mediastinum.
For many patients, MIS has numerous benefits, including less trauma to the body, less blood loss, smaller surgical scars, shorter recovery time, improved quality of life, and less need for pain controlling medication.
Robotic Surgery is performed using a state-of-the-art laparoscopic assist device, called the da Vinci® Surgical System. When surgeons use the system, they are able to efficiently perform complex, minimally invasive procedures. Surgical procedures that used to require large incisions can now be precisely performed with tiny surgical instruments powered by robotic technology. At Northwestern Memorial, surgeons currently use robotic technology for some gynecologic oncology, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic procedures.
