Clinical Outcomes: Center for Atrial Fibrillation

The Center for Atrial Fibrillation at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute focuses on treating patients with the most advanced strategies available in the world. Our successful program is evident by our superior clinical outcomes:

  • In-hospital complication and mortality rate are significantly lower than national benchmarks

  • Compared to national data, atrial fibrillation surgery is frequently combined with other complex surgeries, including mitral valve surgery, to minimize multiple procedures and maximize patient outcomes

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a device that can protect you against dangerous abnormal heart rhythms by constantly monitoring your heart rhythm. ICD at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute far exceeds national standards. Specifically, ICD in-hospital complication rate was 0.7 percent at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, compared to 3.1 percent nationally. Likewise, the ICD mortality rate at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute was 0 percent, compared to 0.4 percent nationally.

Patients often present with an initial diagnosis of atrial fibrillation and, in the course of the preliminary evaluation, mitral valve disease is found. Of mitral valve patients at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, 37.9 percent had atrial fibrillation before surgery. According to the 2007 Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database, atrial fibrillation was present in 31.2 percent of patients before all types of mitral valve surgery. At the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, atrial fibrillation surgery was performed in 91.2 percent of cardiac surgery patients with a previous history of atrial fibrillation. By comparison, the STS average was 54.7 percent. This is beneficial to patients because multiple procedures may be avoided. This practice is widely accepted by multiple national organizations.
